주변에는 가죽으로 된 사물이 많다.

옷이나 구두처럼 신체를 보호하거나 가방처럼 도구적 기능을 담당하는 것들도 있다.

부드럽고 질긴 가죽은 날카롭거나 단단한 물체와의 접촉과 충격으로부터 우리를 보호하고,

뜨겁거나 차가운 외부의 온도도 차단하는 보온 효과를 지닌다.

동물의 피부인 가죽은 근원적으로 사람과는 불가분의 친밀성과 동질감을 지닌다.

그러므로 이를 접촉하고 사용하는 인간에게는 생명력과 온기, 그리고 시각적 윤택함을 전하는 귀한 소재로서 쓰여왔다.

공예가는 재료의 전문가이다. 금속공예를 전공한 나는 다양한 공예작품을 제작하는 과정에서 가죽을 접하게 되었으며, 즉시 매료되었다.

금속과 가죽을 혼용하기도 했으나 근래에는 집중적으로 가죽을 연구했다.

세계 최고 수준의 가죽 장인들과 기업이 참여하는 이탈리아 토스카나 Toscana 주의 산 미니아토 San Miniato 에서의

가죽 워크숍 참여는 가죽에 몰입하는 결정적인 계기가 되어, 이후 국제적인 전시회 참여와 논문연구 작품으로도 이어졌다.

인공재가 아닌 생명체의 피부인 가죽은 볕에 그을리고 마찰에 의해 윤택해지는 자연 친화적인 변화를 겪는다.

이 유기적인 재료를 다루는 방법은 직관적이다.

원하는 형태를 자르고 꿰매어 접합하여 형태를 완성하면 끝이다.

이 대부분의 작업 공정은 온전히 손과 몇 가지 손도구들에 의존한다.

거의 초 단위로 값싼 제품들이 쏟아지는 산업환경에 둘러싸인 우리의 시대에,

한 땀 한 땀 바느질된 가죽공예가 여전히 고귀한 대접을 받고 있는 것은 효율과 속도가 아닌 느림의 미학을 보여주기 때문이다.

 ‘레더 볼Leather Bowl’ 시리즈는 가죽 선을 말아 붙여 형태를 만들고 이들의 표면에 옻칠을 입혀 완성한 기형들이다.

짧은 단위의 선을 말아서 원형을 구축하고 추가적인 선들이 덧붙여져 점차 퍼져나가며 패턴을 만들게 된다.

선들의 집합은 벽이 되고 이들은 공간적으로 확장하며 무언가를 담을 수 있는 기형의 구조물이 된다.

이 과정은 마치 외부환경의 영향을 받고 적응하며 변화하는 동식물의 생장과도 같다.

시간의 경과와 그 속에서 예기치 않는 해프닝을 겪으며 각각의 형체는 고유성을 부여받기 때문이다.

가죽 선들이 집적되면서 만든 무늬는 오랜 세월 동안 더위와 추위를 반복해 견디며 생생한 나무 둥치 속의 나이테와 같다.

가죽과 옻칠로 완성된 ‘레더 볼’들은 생명감을 담고 전하는 그릇이다.

There are many things that are made of leather.

Some of them protest our body like clothes and shoes, and other provide a function such as bags.

Soft and durable leather offers reliable protection against damage from sharp or adrasive object. It is also people.

As a result, it has been used as a valuable material to convey vitality, warmth, and luxury to people who use it or come into contact with it.

 Craftsmen are specialists in materials.

I majored in metal works and was exposed to leather in the process of making various crafts.

I was immediately fascinated. I used to mix metal and leather at first, but recently I have concentrated on using only leather.

I participated in leather workshops at the San Miniato in Tuscany, Italy, where the world’s finest leather craftsmen and companies take part as well.

 This experience has become a major motivating factor for me to immerse myself in creating leather goods.

Since then, it has led me to writing research papers and participating in many international exhibitions.

Leather, the natural skin of life, undergoes an eco-friendly change when it is tanned and also becomes glossy through long use.

I handle this organic material intuitively by cutting the desired shape and sewing it together.

Nearly all of the work involved in leather crafting only requires a skilled pair of hands and some basic tools.

In our modern age, so many products have little to no time dedicated to their creation.

However, handmade leather crafts are still highly valued because of the beauty of slow-life.

 The series of “leathered Bowls” is completed by rolling up cut leather strings into a certain shape and lacquering the surface.

The pattern is made by winding a short until of leather strings into a round shape and lines are added until it growth of plants and animals that adapt to changes in their external environment.

Each shape develops its own identity from the passage of time and unexpected events.

The pattern made by the gathering of leather strings is like a growth ring of a tree that has been produced by repeated changes in temperature over many years.
